From Dusty Bible to Daily Discipline: How God’s Word Changed My Life

ree

For years, my Bible sat on a shelf collecting dust. It was there, close enough to see every day but far enough from my daily life that it might as well have been invisible. I could quote a few verses, share a couple of Sunday School stories, but the truth is this: my phone had more power over me than the Word of God. Notifications won. Netflix won. Comfort won. And my Bible stayed closed.

Maybe you’ve been there too. Maybe you’re there right now. If so, this post is for you.

The Dusty Bible Years

I used to tell myself I was just too busy. Work, family, coaching, projects, something always took priority. Deep down, though, it wasn’t busyness, it was fear. I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t know how to study Scripture beyond just reading the words. And, if I’m honest, sometimes I wasn’t sure I really wanted to hear what God might say to me.

The result? A lack of clarity. A lack of peace. A lack of spiritual leadership in my own home. I believed in God, but I wasn’t consistently walking with Him.

The Turning Point

The shift came when I stepped into accountability. Hosting a discipleship call and being part of a brotherhood meant I couldn’t keep showing up unprepared. I had to be in the Word. Not just to check a box, but because men were looking to me to help lead conversations. More importantly, my family was watching me, too.

That accountability became the spark that turned into daily discipline.

What Changed When I Opened My Bible Daily

Here’s what happened once I moved from dusty Bible to daily discipline:

  1. Clarity – The more I read, the more Scripture came alive. Questions I had for years started making sense when I let God’s Word explain itself.

  2. Consistency – I stopped waiting for the “perfect time” and just built the habit. Ten minutes became twenty. A chapter became a study. It wasn’t about feelings—it was about rhythm.

  3. Leadership – Reading the Bible with my kids and discussing simple truths before bedtime changed our family dynamic. Leading spiritually no longer felt intimidating—it felt natural.

  4. Accountability – My brothers in Christ kept me sharp. Knowing others were on the journey too helped me stay faithful even on the hard days.

Practical Steps if Your Bible Has Dust Too

If you’re in a season where your Bible hasn’t been opened much, here are some simple ways to start fresh:

  • Start small – Read one chapter of the Gospel of Mark or the book of James. It’s straightforward, powerful, and a great starting point.

  • Ask questions – Instead of overthinking, simply ask: What does this show me about God? What does this mean for me today?

  • Read with your family – You don’t need a seminary degree. Just open the Bible and invite your kids and wife into the story. Their questions will deepen your own faith.

  • Find accountability – Whether it’s a friend, a small group, or a brotherhood like ours, you need men walking with you.

For Men Who Feel Stuck

Here’s the truth: you don’t need to know everything. You don’t need to have it all together. God isn’t asking for perfection, He’s asking for presence. Every time you open His Word, you’re inviting Him to shape you.

If your Bible has dust on it, today’s the day to change that. Wipe it off. Open it up. Start fresh.

Closing Challenge

Brotherhood Forged exists for this very reason. We believe men are called to more and we don’t have to do it alone. Inside our community, men are leading their families, sharpening one another, and anchoring themselves in God’s Word daily.
